She/Her/Hers
Zeena Omer is a fourth-year double major in Cultural Anthropology and Global Studies at UC Santa Barbara. Originally from San Jose, California, Zeena’s roots trace back to Eritrea in East Africa. Her essay explores how international institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) function as tools of neocolonialism, particularly in post-colonial African nations. Inspired by her coursework in global political economy, Zeena examines the Kenyan response to IMF-imposed policies, highlighting acts of resistance by workers and students. She hopes her research underscores the exploitative dynamics of global capitalism and the resilience of those who challenge it. Zeena plans to pursue a PhD in History or Anthropology to continue studying resistance movements on the African continent. Outside of academics, she enjoys discovering new food spots, watching TV and movies, and spending quality time with friends and family.
