Lanie Biag is a third-year Sociology major at UC Santa Barbara, with minors in Philosophy and Applied Psychology. She was born in the Philippines and moved to San Jose, California at age 11. Her article was inspired by the current political climate and the escalating attack on women’s reproductive rights. She explores how these rights are not only politicized but also weaponized by extreme conservative and religious groups that aim to limit bodily autonomy rights. Lanie plans to pursue a career in law to advocate for those whose rights and voices are most often overlooked. She hopes readers come away from her article with a clearer understanding of how deeply embedded and damaging these ideologies can be when translated into national policy, as seen in Project 2025. Outside of academics, Lanie enjoys discovering new music across genres and attending intimate concerts featuring emerging artists, and is currently learning how to DJ.
