Imagine is a collaborative academic journal established through the partnership of the Promise Scholars program and the McNair Scholars program to showcase the academic work of our scholars. The journal publishes one issue per year with original research articles written by students who work with faculty mentors across the disciplines.
Both the Promise Scholars and the McNair Scholars programs are committed to supporting low income, first generation, and underrepresented students in their undergraduate endeavors and to promote diversity in academia and the workforce within the broader community.
The Promise Scholars program was initiated by Mike Miller in 2015. Beginning with a first cohort of 124 students, the program has ballooned to serve nearly 500 students today. The Promise Scholars program provides four years of funding (two years for transfer students) and wrap around support services to nearly 500 low income, first generation, and underrepresented students at UCSB.
The McNair Scholars Program was established in memory of physicist and Challenger astronaut, Dr. Ronald E. McNair. It is one of several TRIO programs funded by the Department of Education supporting the academic achievement of students from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education and whose goal is to obtain a Ph.D. Additionally, the McNair program supports science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) scholars are partially funded by Edison International.
